Math problem

Jon says (1:32 PM):
i think jodie's solution is correct
Wei Zhong says (1:32 PM):
same
i saw
haha arts student > 2 science students D:

Jon says (1:32 PM):
i sent to xinyu too
i also sent to my friend studying engineering or math or something in cornell
i feel so stupid
Wei Zhong says (1:33 PM):
so did they solve it ahead of jodie?

Jon says (1:33 PM):
heck no, they haven't solved it
Wei Zhong says (1:33 PM):
HAHA
this is so interesting

Jon says (1:34 PM):
i still feel so stupid =(
Wei Zhong says (1:34 PM):
i feel stupid too

Lol friend. You realise I could only solve it because this is the kind of math I've been doing since arriving in Japan...

the 4, 3, 8 and 6, do they represent the length of the sides? O.O

They are length of the sides, in units (not necessarily cm²)

Let me try. Is it 9?

The answer invokes imaginary numbers.

the principles involved are doable at sec 2...but this deserves a ** for demanding visual ability. which means a student like jon/you can do it. i'd expect both of you to be able to do it leh...

the answer is 6. i'm sure of it. :)

ps i suspect there might be a theorem for this, because the method is generalizable. i certainly haven't learnt the theorem before.

Haha and you cheated! D: First you said the answer is 4 and you're sure of it, then you deleted your comment and posted another, saying that the answer is 6 and you're sure of it. Don't think I don't know just because I've been offline yesterday afternoon ;)

hahahaha i made a careless mistake and corrected it fast enough. i know you know, but i surely wasn't guessing. i can even show you the proof for 9, and my explanation for getting 6 (that i thought the ratio between sides was 2 instead of 3) correctly explains my mistake.

surely you don't think i anyhow guessed. -.-

Clearly this shows that our local curriculum needs more geometry. If you had participated in exchange programmes with Japanese high schools and actually sat through their Mathematics lessons, you would see what I mean.

Japanese maths is win.

However this implies that Sec 2 level math=High school level math in Japan.

Hm.
